                  TUNING IN TO THE SOUNDS
                  OF THE OCEAN
Each marine species has its own
                  way of making sound: cetaceans
click, whistle or roar, fish vibrate their
muscles, hit their swim bladder, rub
their fins or grind their teeth, sea
urchins crack their skeleton and rub
                  their spikes, crustaceans clack their
pincers and shake their antenna and
                  shells... In a marine environment,
sounds are not a luxury, but a means
                  of communication. Essential for
mating, sounds are also used by
certain species to find their bearings
and locate prey in the depths, like
                  sperm whales.
