THE PELAGOS AGREEMENT
The Pelagos Sanctuary is a 87,500 km marine area subject to an agreement between Italy, Monaco and
2
France to protect its marine mammals. What makes the Pelagos Sanctuary unique is the fact that it is
managed by three different authorities, and it includes coastal areas and international waters which form
a huge ecosystem of major scientific, socio-economic, cultural and educational interest.

ACCOBAMS
ACCOBAMS (Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea Mediterranean Sea
and Contiguous Atlantic Area) is a cooperative body working to conserve marine biodiversity in the
Mediterranean and Black Sea. Its primary objective is to reduce the threats to cetaceans in this
geographic area, and improve our knowledge about these animals. ACCOBAMS is the first agreement
