The challenge now is to ensure that bluefin tuna
fishing is managed sustainably. We need to conti-
nue to study the species, which is still somewhat
of a mystery to the science community. It is known
that bluefin tuna comes to the Mediterranean, to re-
produce, however, migration patterns need further
research to be better understood. To verify the as-
sumptions and collect data to assess bluefin tuna
stock levels, the WWF developed a tagging pro-
gramme in 2008, supported by the Prince Albert II
of Monaco Foundation, to gather information and
share with ICCAT which uses this data to define the
species management and conservation plan.
In light of this, the Monaco Sea Fishing Federa-
tion recently got together with WWF International
and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, a
partnership which was presented during Monaco
Ocean Week. Over the coming months, Federation
members will be trained in tagging techniques so
they can help fit tags and gather data. They hope
this will help improve knowledge about this iconic
Mediterranean species.
